The Jumbo Acoustic Guitar – this is the big boy with the typical big voice and deep bass response a lot of players are after in a guitar. But this doesn’t mean it’s boomy with a muddy middle and weak trebles. A quite responsive instrument with great balance, it can be strummed forcefully or delicately played finger-style.

When I built the first of this model from William Cumpiano’s book, “Guitarmaking, tradition and technology” I just thought, you know, a typical guitar. But William informed me that it is actually quite large and can rightly be called a jumbo. Its voice compares to that of a typical dreadnought.

I’m taking liberty with this name as no such instrument was included in the line C.F. Martin Co. built for the Oliver Ditson Music Co. It is what I imagine would have fit. It came about because of my daughter-in-law. I built my first ditson grand concert acoustic guitar and was expecting her to love it—it’s small and light and responds well to a light playing style. Well, she preferred the fuller sound of my bigger guitars. Not to be disuaded, I set out to scale up the beautiful grand concert to a larger size. And, to a certain large degree, I think I succeeded. The grand auditorium has similar, graceful lines and the narrow upper bout is comfortable for the player. The challenge for this rather long body was to get the bridge down low enough past the waist to efficiently couple the strings energy to it. I wanted to keep the short scale length for better responsivenss. So, I stuck with the 12th fret to the body neck joint. The bridge still is considerably higher on the top plate proportianally when compared to the grand concert, but it works. I figured I could always offer a cutaway to someone who plays a lot in the uppe register to compensate for the 12th fret joint.

The tone of this guitar is what I expected and wanted—richer and fuller than the grand concert . Nice bass response, but good balance all the way over to sparkling trebles. This is an all around good choice to suit many playing styles.

The body is small, but it’s voice is surprisingly loud due, in part, to the short scale length and 12th fret to the body neck joint. It is very responsive in the middle and treble strings and actually has decent bass response for such a small guitar. A great finger style instrument. Very light and comfortable to play and a visual delight with its elegant, flowing shape.

CASH GUITARS—ON TONE, PLAYABILITY, CRAFTSMANSHIP

Custom Acoustic Guitars. Master guitarmaker William Cumpiano once said to me, “Make a guitar with good action and decent tone and someone will love it.” That took a considerable amount of pressure off an aspiring luthier. I have, with those encouraging words, been able to much more freely explore and learn the “nuts and bolts” of guitarmaking. Still, It’s not the easy row to hoe. There are no shortcuts to learning how all the parts and construction of a guitar affect the sound. How do you choose the best-tasting tomato? Taste a whole lot of tomatoes. (and take lots of notes)

Talking to numerous guitarists, it soon became apparent that no one shape, size or tone would please every player but I took the advise of another experienced builder and decided to concentrate on, first, one guitar body and build that over and over until I felt confident of my ability to produce consistently good instruments. From there I branched out and tried to vary scale length, body depth and bracing, etc. Then I tried different body shapes, sizes with the same aim for consistency. This is part of the “master plan” of my career to be able to provide instruments to players of different styles of music.

Perhaps the chief task of the guitarmaker is to coax all of the elements of a guitar to produce the most sonorous response possible, everything working together. Choosing the top wood and bracing is the first decision after picking the body style. Aside from voicing the top, body shape/size, scale length and choice of wood for the sides and back can be selected to aim for the desired overall flavour of the guitar’s tone.

My objective is to provide custom talyored instruments to those who want as well as offering quality stock guitars. To reach that goal my aim is to make sure all the geometry, physics and craftsmanship are properly employed to make for a true fingerboard, low action—-in tune all the way up the scale. A beautiful instrument, a joy to play.

I’m currently offering three different steel string models that I think will satisfy the largest number of playing styles. Sorry, I haven’t ventured into nylon string guitars at this point, wanting to concentrate on and perfect the steel strings. Please, read descriptions of my three models to help you decide which you might prefer.

I must add at this point that a properly set up guitar with good responsiveness can be played and appreciated by any accomplished player. I recently had the joy of spending an evening with two players with vastly different playing styles who both played my little steel string parlor model. The first to play was a man who received classical training in flamenco guitar. Although he might have preferred the type of instrument he is used to ( a certain familiar sound, feel—nylon strings!), you could have fooled me! Next, a man who is self-taught (even taught himself the alternate tuning he uses) played gospel/bluegrass/show tunes. He probably would have preferred what he is used to, a larger guitar with typically fuller, bigger base response. Both enjoyed playing the guitar and, I’m tellin’ ya, the audience loved the show.

Life started for me as an Army Brat, moving every three years or so. Born in Indiana in 1951, my family and I soon found ourselves living in Stuttgart, Germay ( Or, so I’m told. I was too young to remember.) After that it was back to the States. Texas, Colorado, California, back to Germany and finally settling in southern Oregon after my Dad’s retirement. I attended thirteen different schools from first grade through high school. I did one four year tour of duty in the Navy. After that, I met my wife of 35 years and moved to Bellingham, Wa. We raised two sons and have been living in the same house now for over thirty years. From no roots to deep ones.

I have a friend who told me something 30 years ago that didn’t really sink in for almost half of that time. She said, “ I don’t think you’d be truly happy without a piece of wood in your hands”. Although I have tried other things, from ditch digging to graphic arts, it turns out she was right. I’ve been making sawdust and shavings now professionally for over 20 years. Guitar making is the most challenging of all the woodworking I’ve done.

Actually, the woodworking itself involved in guitar making is fairly straightforward. The ergonomics and acoustics of the instruments; especially where they are subject to very individual scrutiny and preferences, that’s where the challenge lies. Make a guitar with beautiful action and loud, balanced sound with incredible sustain and three out of five people will rave about it and the other two will be politely indifferent. ( Or the other way around ) “ I prefer a little “fuller” sound.” Or, “I’d like better responsiveness in the middle.” One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received is that if you make a guitar that’s got decent action ,very playable, someone will love it! I’m learning. My basic approach is to carefully choose the woods I use and follow the generally accepted traditional methods of construction. Listening to input from other builders and players is important and, along with hours and hours at the workbench and equal hours of what my wife calls “chin-scratching” I’m forming my “mental model—my virtual guitar”. ( William Cumpiano )

In June of 2001 I had the pleasure of taking a two week tutorial with master guitar maker William Cumpiano who, along with his then partner Jonathan Natelson, wrote the book “ GuitarMaking—Tradition and Technology”, the book that got me started in this craft. That two weeks is all the formal training I’ve had so far. I’ve had the pleasure and received the benefit of consulting and corresponding with some accomplished luthiers who have been extremely generous with their time and expertise—-Thank you, William Cumpiano, Mark Blanchard, Dake Traphagen, Kent Chasson. Many others have been very encouraging and helpful. Luthiers are a friendly, giving bunch.

My younger son and I built our first guitars using Cumpiano’s book in 2000, so I’ve been at this now for eight years. I’ve only built twelve guitars to date, but eight years of agonizing over, eating, breathing and sleeping guitars and gathering and making tools and jigs for their making has prepared me to launch into guitar making professionally. I’m not much of a player, but I have been so inspired by those who can play guitars—-and beautifully!!—I just have to be involved in the only meaningful way I can. I can build them.
